Hace ya muchos años ( creo que ocho ) que este buen señor llegó a decir una frase que lo pinta de cuerpo y alma y que habla de su ego inmenso y su desprecio por todos los demas en una comparación por lo menos inusitada "Llevo tanto tiempo al frente de la AFA como el Papa en la Iglesia". 
 
El cotejo tenía cierta seriedad, pues Juan Pablo II, había sido elegido por los cardenales en 1978, un año antes de que él asumiera en la institución de la calle Viamonte 1366 como sucesor de Alfredo Cantilo y encima ahora el sigue y ya hay nuevo papa.
 
Increíble 27 años aferrado a un sillón y con una edad donde deberá dejar el espacio a los presidentes jovenes y pujantes de los clubes y no firmar contratos aún superiores a sus posibilidades naturales de vida.
 
No se cansa de decir que "A mí me eligieron los clubes, no el almirante Alberto Lacoste", se defiende de quienes lo señalaban como un instrumento del gobierno militar que encabezaba Jorge Rafael Videla conformando el más siniestro trio genocida de la Historia Argentina.
 
Sin embargo en abril de 1979 comenzó el mandato que le otorgaron por unanimidad 35 asambleístas, renovado sucesivamente nada menos que por intermedio de seis reelecciones sin contrincantes en todas ellas.
 
No cabe duda que su gestión, al menos temporalmente, tiene similitudes papables, ya que parece extenderse hasta que él lo decida o su salud se lo permita.
 
"El destino está en Dios", responde cuando se lo consulta sobre si en 2007 buscará otra reválida cuatrienal. 
 
El hombre invencible de AFA minimizó casi risiblemente el único foco de oposición que enfrentó: en 1995, el extinto árbitro Teodoro Nitti presentó una candidatura que sólo cosechó un voto. 
 
¿Cuáles serán los secretos de esta perdurabilidad que, de todas las formas, desafía a la conveniencia de la renovación y la alternancia en el poder y al ejercicio real de la democracia? 
 
Es cierto que mandar está en ser mismo de Grondona.
 
Ya con setenta y tres años, insumió las dos terceras partes de su vida siendo presidente.
 
A los 24 años, junto con un grupo de amigos de Avellaneda, fundó Arsenal, club que es su orgullo y al que aconseja e influencia notoriamente. 
 
Tiene asegurada la receptividad porque el presidente es su hijo Julio ("Julito").
 
Hizo un impasse y dejó la entidad de Sarandí para dirigir Independiente entre 1976 y 1979, que fue el paso previo a su llegada a la AFA, lugar donde ya había ingresado en 1978 como secretario de Finanzas y Hacienda. 
 
Supo muy astutamente hacerse conocer en el exterior gracias al triunfo de la selección argentina en 1978 que fue el inició de su trayectoria trascendiendo las fronteras que se asento con el segundo mundial conseguido por la selección Argentina.
 
Así se ganó un lugar importante en la FIFA, donde ocupa una de las vicepresidencias desde 1988 y está a cargo de la Comisión de Finanzas, en la que se administra un presupuesto y un volumen de negocios superior a los mil millones de dólares.
 
Por algo la FIFA es conocida como la industria sin humo más lucrativa del continente. Allí se ganó la confianza y la consideración del ex presidente Joao Havelange y del actual titular, Joseph Blatter, quienes aprecian en Grondona las cualidades de un hombre consecuente, responsable y prudente.
 
Representativo como el que más del mejor futbol de sudamérica y donde sabe manipular no solo los torneos de la AFA.
 
El mandamás de la AFA construyó un liderazgo monolítico provisto de claros y no tan claros vallados que no descuida en ninguna circunstancia.
 
Un ex dirigente de Boca fue muy claro componiendo el tipo de personaje que representa:
"Con su estilo campechano, Grondona le advierte a su interlocutor que conoce el oficio y que no lo van a pasar así nomás. No tiene arranques autoritarios, pero sabe marcar su territorio para que ninguno se pase de la raya" .
"Es un personaje especial, con una capacidad notable. No cualquiera llega desde un club de barrio a la vicepresidencia de la FIFA", Fue moldeando un perfil de patrón, supo tejer alianzas y consensos que le respondieron con lealtad y sin cuestionamientos. "Julio todo lo hace pasar por él. Tiene el estilo de los caudillos. Recibe a los demás y les dice: ?Yo te lo arreglo, yo te ayudo´. Los hace sentir en deuda, dependientes. Así fue construyendo poder". 
 
Es cierto es un muy hábil negociador, como principal virtud debería decir que siempre se las ingenió para conciliar intereses opuestos, como pudieron ser clubes grandes contra chicos, Buenos Aires contra el interior.
 
Según la opinión del ex dirigente boquense:
"Sabe colocarse por encima de los problemas para no quedar enganchado con alguna parte, coinciden en su entorno. Su perpetuación en el poder puede ser vista como una virtud personal que no necesariamente es beneficiosa desde el punto de vista de la calidad institucional. Algunos lo acusan de aplicar una política de prebendas de comité, propia de quien está habituado a controlar, domesticar y repartir premios y castigos. 
 
No es bueno que una institución se termine fusionando con una persona. Julio puede llegar a creer que quien lo critica a él critica a todo el fútbol. Oponerse a él es oponerse al sistema. Esto podría evitarse con una conducción más colegiada, más repartida y menos individualista". 
 
Sin embargo su historia se inicia en la ferretería Lombardi-Grondona, inaugurada en 1923 en Sarandí.
A los 20 años debió abandonar los estudios en tercer año de ingeniería para cubrir en el emprendimiento familiar -es el mayor de seis hermanos- a su padre, un descendiente de genoveses afectado por una hemiplejia con parálisis que le causó la muerte a los 56 años.
 
Allí conoció a la empleada Nélida Pariani, que luego sería su esposa y a quien asegura querer aún más que a sus tres hijos: Liliana, Humberto y Julio, quienes le dieron seis nietos.
 
Está convencido de que nada lo endureció más en la vida que el secuestro de su hijo Humberto en 1973, a la salida de un entrenamiento de Arsenal. Durante nueve días se encargó de negociar con los secuestradores el pago del rescate y la liberación. 
 
Por eso, pese a su trabajo en la AFA y por el dicho de que el "ojo del amo engorda al ganado", todas las  mañanas pasa por la ferretería y sus dos estaciones de servicio, una en Avellaneda y otra en Bernal. 
 
También es copropietario de las empresas Crucesita y Baprisud S.A., dedicadas al negocio de la construcción.
 
Alrededor de la media tarde por lo general llega a la AFA, en su despacho del tercer piso, que está super despojado de equipamientos modernos ni siquiera tiene una computadora.
 
Grondona es de la época en la que todo se solucionaba sin tanta asistencia de la tecnología. Le alcanza con el teléfono, los informes de sus allegados y los encuentros personales a los que es tan afecto. 
 
Inevitablemente con los variados gobiernos nacionales contemporáneos a su gestión, Grondona aplicó la política de la moderación y la concordia: nunca un encantamiento definitivo con nadie y si un beneplácito con todos asi hizo que no pudieran hipotecarle el futuro. 
  
Sobrevivió a gobiernos militares, radicales, peronistas, aliancistas y al actual de Kirchner.
  
El único intento para sacarlo de su trono se dió cuando asumió Carlos Menem en 1989, pues algunos dirigentes futbolísticos con vinculaciones con el justicialismo urdieron un plan para desestabilizarlo, que no llegó a mayores por la intervención de Eduardo Duhalde, a cuyos oídos había llegado la condición de "intocable" que tenía Grondona para Havelange.
  
Su mayor demostración de firmeza fue para mantener a Carlos Bilardo en los meses previos al Mundial 86, cuando desde la Secretaría de Deportes se montó más de un operativo para quedarse con la cabeza del técnico.
  
Disfrutó del título en México con la satisfacción incomparable del que saco a flote una causa perdida por lejos. 
  
Políticamente afiliado al radicalismo desde 1964, Grondona rechazó en 1983 la propuesta de ese partido para ser candidato a intendente de Avellaneda.
  
Dijo "A la AFA no la cambio por nada", el mismo manifiesta haber votado a Menem en 1995.
  
Sin embargo no por nada le sirvió ser radical pues durante el gobierno de Raúl Alfonsín fue ayudado para resistir el pedido de intervención de los ex diputados nacionales peronistas Miguel Unamuno y Héctor Maya. 
  
Para evitar suspicacias, acertadamente, adoptó como norma desde 1980 no ir a la cancha en los partidos del campeonato local. 
  
La Justicia lo tuvo en la mira en más de una oportunidad, y en todas salió indemne.
En la actualidad cuenta con orgullo que todas las causas que le abrieron fueron cerradas con su falta de mérito y absolución.
  
En la AFA hubo más de 30 allanamientos por presunta administración fraudulenta y evasión impositiva, denuncia que había presentado el ex diputado justicialista Mario Das Neves, que también pidió la revisión de los contratos de televisación del fútbol firmados con Torneos y Competencias.
 
El ex juez federal Carlos Branca lo procesó por el supuesto delito de encubrimiento en tres casos de dopping. 
  
Bueno, es un breve resumen de un caudillo más de los tantos que pululan en nuestro pais y que como todos tienen en común el no despegarse de la silla de mando, no tener la más minima intención de dejar el mando y perpetuarse en el poder, el mal más tradicional y más antiguo de los argentinos sin distintinción de banderias.
